If you have spoken to Haylie recently you know how obsessed she is with frogs. She has a frog calendar, frog jewelry, frog shirts, frog etc.... So needless to say, she was absolutely smitten by "Freckles"...
We spent time taking pictures of Freckles and admiring how really quite little "he" was. He actually was pretty cute. The kids decided it was time to go find a nice place to let him go into the lake. Haylie was extremely worried that something would happen to Freckles after they let him go. I told her it was the right thing to do and that Freckles would be happier in the lake, swimming about happily in the water, eating very, very small bugs. It is, as I explained to her, our job to take care of Heavenly Father's creatures. Haylie finally agreed.
Landon and Haylie walked to the edge of the lake and ceremoniously let Freckles go into the water, in which he was promptly eaten by a large fish...
This is a true story and Haylie is NOT ready to talk about it.

Sometimes you just can't win. There you were, a great teaching moment, beautifully handled,and then - GULP.
Maybe there could be a "Circle of Life" musical number inserted here. Your story was a more literal circle of life... no cute little lions here. Oh well, carry on. Be prepared for the, "Mom, remember what happened LAST time?"

I am so sorry that Haylie was traumatized, but I can't stop laughing!
Actually, Haylie vowed to never eat another fish as long as she lived. Not even fish sticks! (Is that fish?)
